Disclosure Statement Ms. Jennifer Johnson SPED English & Concepts of Explicit Reading 2015-2016 Website: http://msjohnsonhunterjuniorhigh.weebly.com/ Email: [email protected] Consultation: 7:50-8:55 Monday-Thursday
Our classroom follows the school's SOARS theme during the year.
Staying prepared. Bring a pencil and a book to class every day. At the beginning of class, assemble your required materials.
On time. Be in your seat with the day's materials before the tardy bell rings.
Always engaged in learning. Do your best. Listen carefully and follow directions. Work cooperatively with others.
Respectful and Responsible. Respect opinions, personal space, and belongings of others and of yourself.
Safe. Use kind words only. Use supplies and technology properly. Keep the classroom neat and orderly.
Classroom Expectations Students are expected to enter the classroom ready to learn. Students are expected to come with a pencil every day and to behave in a respectful manner. Bullying will not be tolerated. Expected classroom behaviors are posted in the classroom and listed here.
1. KYHFOOTY (Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself. This includes not throwing things.) 2. Be prepared and ready to learn. (You should be in your seat with required class materials before the tardy bell rings.) 3. Follow all instructions immediately. 4. Complete your own work completely. (Do not copy other students' work and do not let others copy your work. Complete your assignments before submitting them.) 5. Participate appropriately. (group discussions, partner work, individual assignments, speaking in English in the classroom, using technology, appropriate language)
Reading Every student is required to read outside of class for at least 30 minutes a day. Students choose their own reading material. I do ask that parents approve of their student's book selections. Reading every day is crucial to your child's success in school. Students are required to bring a free reading book to class each day. There are various times during class they will have opportunities to read.
Technology and Electronics Students will have access to a school chrome book and/or desktop computer that they will be using regularly to complete classroom assignments. Students are expected to use hardware and software appropriately. Students will be financially responsible for damages to chrome books, computers, and other classroom technology.
It is strongly recommended that students provide their own headphones/ear buds to use with the chrome books. I do have class sets available for students to use, however, most students will be more comfortable using their own.
Specific Chromebook Policies
Follow the district's acceptable use policy
Do not change settings on the Chromebook without teacher permission
Treat Chromebooks with respect ($250 replacement cost)
No Cyberbullying
Do not delete anyone else’s profile
No food or drink near the device
Use as a tool for education
Keep password secure
Notify teacher immediately of any Chromebook issues
Set and use a profile picture for avatar/icon
Students are permitted at various times to use personal electronic devices in the classroom. Students will be informed which applications they are permitted to use during any given class period. Students who do not follow instructions will have their devices confiscated and brought to the office. A parent will need to retrieve the item at this point. If a student refuses to relinquish his/her device to the teacher, he/she will have the option of taking the device to the office himself/herself. If he/she refuses, the student will receive an automatic office referral and administrative consequence. Students are not permitted to share personal electronic devices with other students.
Assignments and Extra Credit Each student's grade will be calculated based on completion of daily work, participation, writing assignments, and tests. Late work will be accepted. Each day an assignment is late, 5% will be deducted up to a total of 30%. There will be a cut-off day at the end of each quarter. After the cut-off day, no late work will be accepted. Extra credit is given occasionally on writing assignments that greatly exceed expectations.
To allow students to learn from others by both giving and receiving feedback and to assist me in using instructional time as efficiently as possible, I will occasionally have students correct one another's work. To protect privacy, parents may notify me in writing if they do not wish their student to participate in grading activities and the student will be exempted.
Academic and Citizenship Grades Academic grades for class are based on a total points system using the following scale: A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% P 50-69% F below 50%
Information concerning missing assignments and the current status of grades may be obtained from gradebook at http://gb.granite.k12.ut.us
Citizenship grades are determined by a student's behavior in class. Tardies, unexcused absences, class participation, and respect for self and others will impact this grade. I will follow the HJH school-wide discipline policy and all guidelines and policies established by Granite School District.
Classroom Consequences A student will receive consequences based on appropriate and inappropriate classroom behavior. Students who are on task will earn rewards such as additional technology opportunities (music, free computer time, etc.), tickets for classroom drawings, and other class prizes. Students will also have opportunities to work together as a class to earn class rewards.
Students who are off task will be warned twice before receiving negative consequences. These consequences may include time spent after the bell (up to 1 1/2 minutes), think time in another classroom, phone call home, supervised lunch, after school detention with teacher. Please note, each swear word said during class results in 30 seconds after the bell. The time may need to be served during lunch or after school if there are more than three incidents in one class period. More serious consequences include after school detention, Friday school, and in-school suspension.
I reserve the right to issue an incomplete grade (I) for the term grade for students with unserved lunch detentions or after school detentions. When the detentions have been completed, the letter grade will be issued.
I'm looking forward to an exciting and fun year learning with you!
